Joe Louis Arena is home to the NHL's Detroit Red Wings.  The arena was built in 1979 and seats 19,983.

The arena is located in downtown Detroit, on the Detroit river next to Cobo Arena.  Parking surrounds the arena, and there are public garages downtown as well.

Joe Louis is possibly best known for the octopuses fans threw on the ice during playoff games, signifying the eight games a team needed to win the Stanley Cup in the pre-expansion NHL.  The practice is now banned by the NHL.

"The Joe" hosts numerous college games in addition to Red Wings contests.  The main events are the Great Lakes Invitational in December and the CCHA tournament in March.  Visit College Hockey at the Joe for more information.
