Houston is a city of 1.9 million residents located on the western coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The city's population is very diverse; Houston is home to people of more nationalities (over 100) than any city other than New York and Los Angeles.
College Station is located 98 miles northwest of Houston. The city is home to Texas A&M University. Check out JOHNNY ON THE SPOT to see how others rate Houston!! NIGHTLIFE The center of the Houston nightlife is the downtown area. There are plenty of bars in the area, which is very convenient for sports fans given the downtown locations of Minute Maid Park and Toyota Center, and the many available hotels. There are also many bars near Rice University, a few miles southwest of downtown. Check the Restaurants and Bars page for more info. FOOD According to Zagat's 2001 survey, Houston residents eat out more often than residents of any other city. The city is home to over 3,000 restaurants, so there are plenty to choose from. The city, and Texas in general, are well known for serving up great barbecue, so don't leave town without sampling some. Check out the Restaurants and Bars page for the best offerings in Houston! HOUSTON ATTRACTIONS Houston is well known as the headquarters of NASA. You can tour the Johnson Space Center, located about 25 miles south of Houston. If you're looking for an amusement park, Six Flags AstroWorld is located next to the Astrodome and Reliant Stadium. Houston has no casinos in the area, but you can catch horse racing at Sam Houston Race Park and greyhound racing at Gulf Greyhound Park. See our Gambling page for more information. TRANSPORTATION There are plenty of cabs to get you around Houston. There is no subway, but there is a trolley system that will also help. Hobby airport is only 11 miles from downtown, while George Bush Airport is 20 miles, so if you're staying downtown and confining yourself to that area, you might be better off without a car. Reliant Stadium is about 7 miles from downtown. WEATHER Houston's is comfortable in spring and fall, but very hot and muggy in the summer. Rain is not uncommon, particularly in the summer. Check the City Weather page for historical temperatures and precipitation.
