Raleigh is the largest city in the "research triangle" comprised of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  The town is located in the northeastern quarter of North Carolina, and is the capital of the state.

Raleigh is home to 276,000 citizens, as well as the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL and North Carolina State University of the Atlantic Coast Conference.  The latter is infinitely more popular than the former, and is the main reason for most visits to Raleigh for sporting event purposes.

Durham and Chapel Hill, both located northwest of Raleigh, are home to Duke and North Carolina, respectively.  Those two schools, along with NC State, have combined to win eight national championships in men's basketball and represent the historical power base in the nation's strongest basketball conference, the ACC.

NIGHTLIFE

Raleigh has several bars near the RBC Center and NC State campus.  However, the best nightlife scene in the area is on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

The local cuisine in Raleigh, as in most of North Carolina, is Carolina-style barbecue.  Barbecue is available all over the area.  There are also plenty of restaurants offering typical American fare as well as some seafood restaurants.

TRANSPORTATION

If you'll be driving in between Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, your best option is to rent a car.  Cabs are available in Raleigh and Durham, and to a lesser extent in Chapel Hill.
