The Texas Longhorns, members of the Big 12 Conference, field national
powerhouse teams in both football and basketball.
The Texas football team plays at Darrell Royal-Texas Memorial
Stadium, which opened in 1924 to a crowd of 13,500; the stadium now
seats over 80,000. A massive, $90 million renovation was completed in
1999, resulting in the addition of an upper deck and luxury boxes, and
the replacement of the stadium's artificial turf with a grass surface.
The basketball team plays at the Erwin Center, located next to
Memorial Stadium. The Erwin Center opened in 1977 and seats
16,331. The arena will host the NCAA men's South regional finals
on March 25 & 27, 2005.
Texas also fields a powerhouse baseball team, which plays at one of
the best college baseball stadiums in the nation. Disch-Falk Field
opened in 1975 and seats 6,649.
All three facilities are located on-campus in
Austin. Parking is available for baseball and football, but is
very difficult to find for football games.
There are numerous bars and restaurants
nearby, and there are several hotels within
walking distance.
