PETERSBURG ATTRACTIONS With its location on the Gulf Coast, the Tampa Bay area does not lack for beaches and water sports in the area. Busch Gardens Tampa is a theme park located a few miles northeast of downtown Tampa. Tickets are about $50 per day. The Florida Aquarium is located in downtown Tampa; tickets are $13-$22, depending on what you want to see. If you want to place some bets, Tampa Bay Downs features live thoroughbred racing from December through May. Derby Lane, located in St. Petersburg, is one of the nation's top greyhound race courses, and the Tampa Dog Track is located just north of downtown. There are some riverboat gambling options north of the city in Tarpon Springs and Port Richey. NIGHTLIFE Nightlife starts and ends in Ybor City. Florida's version of Bourbon St. is an old-town part of Tampa with countless nightclubs and bars, located about 10 miles from downtown. St. Petersburg is about a $40 cab ride from downtown, and also has a few bars if you're in for a Devil Rays' game. Clearwater is East of Tampa and North of St. Pete, and features many hotel bars right on the gulf, as well as the original Hooters restaurant. TRANSPORTATION With Tampa International Airport right downtown, you can spend a weekend in Tampa without renting a car. Cabs are readily available around downtown. Ybor City, the Ice Palace and Raymond James Stadium are all within a 10 minute cab ride. If you are in town for a baseball game, or plan on spending time in Clearwater, you may want to go with a rental car. The cab ride from Tampa to St. Petersburg is about $40 one way. Without many bars around Raymond James Stadium, you may want a car simply to use for tailgating. WEATHER A Gulf of Mexico breeze is always refreshing to the Tampa area. During the winter, temperatures are in the 70's and it gets down to the forties at night at times. In the summer it heats up, but the beaches can provide refreshment. Check the City Weather page for historical temperatures and precipitation. |
