The
Baltimore area has two major racetracks. Pimlico is located
in Baltimore city, while Laurel Race Course is located about 20
miles south, in Laurel, MD. Pimlico and Laurel host racing
almost year-round; the tracks are dark for a month spanning June
and July and offer simulcast wagering only, and racing shifts to
Timonium during the Maryland State Fair in the eleven days prior
to and including Labor Day.
Both tracks are steeped in history; Pimlico is the second-oldest
track in the nation (behind Saratoga), and has been in operation
since 1870. Laurel opened in 1911. |
Pimlico's biggest races are the Preakness,
the second jewel of the Triple Crown, and the Pimlico Special, a Grade I
race. Both are held in May. Laurel is home to the Maryland
Million, a sort of Maryland Breeders' Cup held in October.
Pimlico is located on Northern Parkway in North Baltimore. Take
I-83 from downtown, and take Northern Parkway west. The track is a
mile from the exit.
Laurel is located about 20 minutes south of downtown. Take
I-395 from downtown to I-95. Take the Laurel exit East and follow
signs to the track.
