The TD Banknorth Garden (formerly FleetCenter) has proven to be an adequate replacement for the historical Boston Garden.  It opened in 1995 and seats just under 20,000 for most sporting events.  

There are plenty of restaurants and bars around for pregame food and drink, all within walking distance and all happy and willing to get you out of the bar and into your seat before game time.
