Southern Methodist University was founded in 1911, and is home to 10,000 students.  SMU is a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

The football team received a new home in 2000; Gerald J. Ford Stadium holds 32,000 fans.  The main attraction for the stadium is The Boulevard, the main drag down the center of campus that is the focus of the pre-game tailgating scene.

The basketball team plays in the 9,000 seat Moody Coliseum.
