Jacksonville is represented in major professional sports by the Jaguars of the NFL. The Jags play at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, located on the banks of the St. Johns river. The stadium's prime location allows many fans to tailgate on their boats. Jacksonville is also home to the Barracudas of the ACHL, who play at Jacksonville Arena. Jacksonville is the closest major city to both Gainesville, home of the Florida Gators, and Tallahassee, home of Florida State. Gainesville is 73 miles southwest of the city, while Tallahassee is 163 miles due west. Prices in Jacksonville are about average. For the most part, you won't find the high prices common to other big cities in Florida. Check out JOHNNY ON THE SPOT to see how others rate Jacksonville!! FOOD Jacksonville is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, which provide a bounty of seafood options at just about any restaurant. There is a good mix of fine dining and seafood shacks, depending on your tastes. Check out the Restaurants and Bars page for the best offerings in Jacksonville! JACKSONVILLE ATTRACTIONS For daytime diversions, there are plenty of beaches. The downtown and waterfront areas have plenty of shops and restaurants, with a water taxi to shuffle you around. There are several museums around downtown, notably the Museum of Science & History. Jacksonville Landing has shops, restaurants and entertainment right on the water. Just north of town are the Jacksonville Zoo and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. If you're looking for some gambling options, there are Riverboat Casinos about a half hour drive from downtown. There is also greyhound racing at the Jacksonville Kennel Club. See our gambling page for more info. NIGHTLIFE Most of the good local bars are scattered around downtown. Jacksonville Landing has plenty of good restaurants and bars, but it is somewhat of a tourist attraction. Southbank, across the river, has some good bars and great views of downtown and the water traffic. The beaches are filled with sunbathers and swimmers during the day, and at night Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach are two great nightspots. The beaches are 15 miles east of downtown. Check the Restaurants and Bars page for more info. TRANSPORTATION If you're staying downtown you shouldn't need to rent a car unless you plan on going to the beaches, or to the Riverboats for gambling. Cab fare from the airport is about $30 to downtown. Other than the water taxis around the downtown area, the public transportation isn't widely used. WEATHER Jacksonville is warm, but not too hot, during the summer months, with cool temperatures in spring and fall. It can get a bit rainy in late summer, and the winters can get a little chilly, but overall the weather is very good. Check the City Weather page for historical temperatures and precipitation.
