LAS VEGAS SPORTS

The heart of the Las Vegas StripNew York is often called the "city that never sleeps," but in fact, Las Vegas is the town that stays up all night.  Vegas is the nation's playground; it is unlike any other city in the country.  A town of nearly half a million residents, Vegas attracts more than 35 million visitors each year.

The Las Vegas Strip is where most visitors prefer to stay.  The Strip is a three mile long carnival of lights and colors, with huge casinos lining Las Vegas Boulevard.

The Paris hotel and casinoThe downtown area is further north, and lacks the glamour and atmosphere of the Strip; it is geared towards the hard-core rather than casual gambler.

Las Vegas lacks a major pro sports team, although UNLV's basketball team could hardly have been called "amateur" during most of the reign of Jerry Tarkanian.  UNLV plays hoops at the Thomas & Mack Center, located just off the strip, while the football team plays in Henderson at Sam Boyd Stadium.  Vegas is also home to the AAA Las Vegas 51s, who play at Cashman Field.  The city also hosts several other sporting events throughout the year; check our Events page for more info.

The sports scene in Las Vegas goes well beyond any pro or college teams, however; legalized sports gambling sets the city apart from every other town.  Every casino has at least a rudimentary sports book, where bets can be placed on current sporting events, horse races, and on future league champions.  The sports books are particularly festive during major events such as the Super Bowl and NCAA tournament.

FOOD

Las Vegas food is about both quality and quantity.  You can find anything you want, from fast food to a formal dinner.  Every casino has several restaurants, one of which is usually buffet-style.  The prices are cheaper than most resorts in the country, but beware that in some restaurants, you get what you pay for.

LAS VEGAS ATTRACTIONS

There is plenty to do in Las Vegas even if you don't spend all your time in the casinos.  Check out the Stratosphere Tower, the tallest building west of the Mississippi.  The tower features a thrill rides, restaurants, and lounges, all 1,149 feet above the ground.

Vegas is known as the entertainment capital of the world for good reason.  There are dozens of shows to choose from every night.  For tickets to every show in town, visit Las Vegas Show Tickets.

Vegas is also home to dozens of fabulous golf courses.  Check with your hotel's concierge; many casinos have partnerships with or own local golf courses.  For golf course information, visit Golfing in Las Vegas.

You can also take a helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon, passing Hoover Dam and other magnificent sites as well.  The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has a good list of tour companies.

TRANSPORTATION

You should let your Vegas plans dictate whether or not you rent a car in Vegas.  If you plan on sticking to the Strip, a car is not necessary; the airport is just off the Strip, and you can easily between any two casinos in the area.

If you plan on heading to a golf course or any out-of-town excursion, a car might be your best bet.  However, most casinos offer shuttle service to many golf courses and other attractions.

WEATHER

Las Vegas is very hot in the summer, and warm during the day in winter.  Nights can be cool, especially in the wintertime.  There is virtually no humidity, so the heat is not a huge issue.

Check the City Weather page for historical temperatures and precipitation.
