Horse Racing

Horse Racing is a big industry in South Florida, with two major tracks located right in Miami.

Gulfstream Park, located in Hallandale just south of Ft. Lauderdale, features live racing from early January until late April.  It is home to February's Fountain of Youth Stakes and March's Florida Derby, both key Kentucky Derby prep races.

Calder, located right next to Dolphins Stadium, takes over for racing from the end of April until early January.

Hialeah Park closed its doors in 2001.

Jai-Alai

Jai-alai is a regional game recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the "fastest game on Earth," with the pelota reaching speeds of 180 mph.  There are several frontons in Miami, all of which offer wagering not only on jai-alai, but on horses as well. 

The Dania fronton is located just south of the Ft. Lauderdale airport.  The Miami fronton is located at 3500 NW 37th Avenue near downtown.  Both offer matinees several days a week and night-time events five nights per week; check their websites for schedules.
