French Quarter Bars & Restaurants

The Quarter is world famous for its party atmosphere, and rightfully so.  It is packed with restaurants and bars.  Most of the nightlife centers on Bourbon Street, but there are good restaurants throughout.

Acme Oyster House

Cajun/Raw bar

724 Iberville St.

acme2.jpg (27503 bytes)Located half a block off Bourbon St, the Acme Oyster House gets very high marks for its raw oysters ($6.95/doz), jambalaya, and other entrees ($7-$15).  There is usually a wait outside, but its worth it.  Don't miss this place.

Storyville District

Cajun/Live Music

125 Bourbon St.

Storyville is a great place to eat a quality dinner ($14-$21 entrees, sandwiches under $10) and hear live music.  It is a nice place that looks and feels more expensive than it is.  Try their hurricane and hear some great jazz.

Mango Mango's

Daiquiri Bar

Three Bourbon St. Locations

Mango's serves up about 12 different daiquiris, and also beer and liquor.  There are three of them on Bourbon Street, so they're hard to miss.  They serve pizza and similar food over the counter, but you're better off sticking to the daiquiris.

The R&B Club

Live Blues

617 Bourbon St.

r&bclub.jpg (22888 bytes)Head into the R&B Club for some great blues with no cover (although drinks are at least $5).  This is a no-frills club; they simply have great musicians.  Three bands a day play starting at 2 pm.

Mr. B's Bistro

Creole/Live Music

201 Royal St.

Mr. B's is a moderately priced restaurant that serves up authentic Cajun food and also features live music.  Located a block from Bourbon Street.

Kerry Irish Pub

Irish/Live Music

331 Decatur St.

Kerry's is a small Irish bar with live music and no cover charge.  Relax to some good music and a pint of Guiness.

Felix's Oyster House

Iberville St.

felixs.jpg (29100 bytes)Located on the corner of Bourbon and Iberville, Felix's offers raw oysters and Cajun delicacies.  They have several TV's as well, so you can have a few beers and catch a game.

House of Blues

Live Music

225 Decatur St.

The House of Blues features great live bands and also has an outdoor garden.  Big shows sell out early; visit their web site for ticket information.

Downtown New Orleans Bars & Restaurants

Most large hotels in New Orleans are located downtown, and there are restaurants and bars all around.  The French Quarter is right next door.

Mother's

Cajun

401 Poydras St.

Mother's has great Cajun cuisine, including breakfast.  Po' Boys run $4-$9, and entrees run $10-$18.  Located a few blocks from Canal Street, near Riverwalk.

LeMoyne's Landing

American

1 Poydras St.

LeMoyne's Landing is located next to the Riverwalk, right on the Mississippi River.  Prices are a little high, but you can sit outside and watch the Mississippi.

University/Garden District Bars & Restaurants

This area is southwest of downtown and the French Quarter, and encompasses Tulane University.  It is a good alternative to the French Quarter if you want a change of pace, particularly during Mardi Gras, when parades run up and down St. Charles Avenue.

TJ Quill's

Sports Bar

7620 Maple St.

TJ's has a lot of beers on tap, lots of TV's, and lots of pool tables.  It is always packed, and attracts a college crowd.

Fat Harry's

Sports Bar

4330 St. Charles Ave

fatharrys.jpg (27272 bytes)Fat Harry's, on the corner of Napoleon and St. Charles, has a huge bar and a lot of TV's.  There are video poker machines if you want to gamble, and the food is good and reasonably priced.

Camellia Grill

Diner

626 S. Carrollton

This is purely a restaurant, and you will wait to get in; but its well worth it.  Try their famous hamburger, or get a world-class omelet.  If you're staying downtown, Camellia's is a good place to go for breakfast before you head to the airport; its on the way if you head out St. Charles Ave.
