Manhattan - Upper East Side Bars & Restaurants

These bars are located in Manhattan's Upper East Side, east of Central Park.

 

Brother Jimmy's Bait Shack/Brother Jimmy's BBQ & Booze

BBQ

1644 Third Avenue/1485 Second Avenue

Brother Jimmy's is a southern-themed bar with two locations.  Both serve beer in plastic cups, liquor in fishbowls, and have a theme with drink specials on Wednesday night (White Trash Night on Third Ave, Southern Appreciation Night on Second).  There are plenty of TV's, and the place is packed for big SEC and ACC football and basketball games.

The Big Easy is a drinking hole that also offers TV's, pool, darts, and affordable food.  It is an excellent place to go for very cheap drinks.  Happy Hour is every day from 5-8, and there is a special each night from 9-10 featuring $1 Buds and well drinks.

Big Sur is a good place to have a few martinis and smoke some cigars.  The prices are reasonable by New York standards.

 

Turtle Bay Grill & Lounge

Turtle Bay serves up good and affordable food.  The large bar is open until 2AM.

 

 

Manhattan - Upper West Side Bars & Restaurants

The Upper West Side, located west of Central Park, has plenty of offerings.

A good place to hang out, particularly on NFL Sundays, when $15 gets you all the beer and wings you can consume.  Located on Amsterdam near 79th Street.

 

Jake's Dilemma

Jake's is a comfortable bar with a wide beer selection (both draft and bottled).  The bar offers pool and darts, but the only food is peanuts and popcorn.

 

Gin Mill

A rowdy bar with great drink prices and specials.  Located between 81st and 82nd Streets.

 

Prohibition

503 Columbus Avenue

Prohibition is located just west of Central Park, between 84th and 85th Streets.  It is a very popular restaurant/bar with good food and reasonable prices.

One of the top sports bars in New York, Time Out also serves up very good bar food.  With a row of TV's extending the length of the bar, you'll be sure to find your game on.

 

Dublin House

An Irish bar that attracts a lot of college students, the Dublin House offers cheap domestic pitchers and of course Guinness.

 

 

Midtown Manhattan Bars & Restaurants

Manhattan's Midtown section is located just south of Central Park, and encompasses Times Square and Grand Central Terminal.  There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.

 

Delta Grill

The Delta Grill is a great Cajun-style restaurant in midtown.  The bar features specials frequently, and is a great place to hang out.

New York's ESPNZoneESPNZone has good food, big drinks, and expensive prices.  Obviously, there are plenty of TV's showing sports.  Located in Times Square.

 

Heartland Brewery & Chop House

New York's Heartland Brewery and Chop HouseThe Heartland Brewery serves up excellent brews, as well as great food from a varied menu.  It is located within one block of Times Square.

WWE New York offers standard American fare, at reasonable prices for New York.  Located in Time Square, it is open only until 11 each night, and does not accept reservations.

If you walk into Plataforma, be sure of two things:  that you are hungry, and that you are not a vegetarian.  An endless parade of meat will be brought to your table; servers cut your portions off a skewer, and you can get as much as you want.  Call 212-245-0505 for reservations.

 

Connolly's Pub

Connolly's is New York's largest Irish bar.  The food is good and very affordable, in an informal setting.  Connolly's is also a full-service bar that is open all night.

 

 

Manhattan - Union Square/Gramercy Park/East Village Bars & Restaurants

Bars in this area are located on the east side between 10th and 25th Streets.

The Beauty Bar is a converted beauty salon with a unique theme and atmosphere.  The bar is packed every night.

Paddy McGuire's features 20 oz Imperial pints, pool tables, dart boards, and sports on tv.  The bar is decidedly Irish, and offers about 15 beers on tap.  Cash only.

Cibar (rhymes with cigar) is a great martini bar that for some reason is usually not crowded.  The atmosphere and drinks are excellent.

A no-cover jazz club, Detour has great live music every night.

 

 

Hoboken Bars & Restaurants

Hoboken, located right across the Hudson River from Manhattan in New Jersey, is a one square mile town wedged between the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels.  The town makes great use of that single mile, as there are over 100 bars in the area.

 

There is a law in Hoboken that you cannot enter a bar after 2AM, although they serve until 3.  Keep that in mind if you're out late.

The Black Bear offers good food and drinks, plus a cigar lounge and pool table upstairs.  There are also plenty of TV's.

 

Texas Arizona

Texas Arizona is great in the summer, as it offers outdoor seating.  Located directly across from the train station, the bar is great for people-watching.  Great happy hours, and live music on weekends.

 

Willie McBride's

Irish

616 Grand St.

Willie McBride's is an Irish bar with a large dance floor.  Often featuring live music, the bar also has a pool table and a is a good place to hang out.

 

Quiet Woman

The Quiet Woman is a little off the beaten path.  It feels like a bar and not a trendy nightspot, and gets crowded only on weekends.  The bar has a pool table and dart board.

 

Miss Kitty's Saloon

Miss Kitty's is a trendy bar featuring 80's music.  It is a fun place with a mixed-ages crowd.

 

East LA

East LA has great food (in a small seating area), and amazing margaritas.
