Oakland was a day trip for us this year to go see the A's. We stayed in S.F. (see my review of San Fran in that section, under the same ID) and took the train to the stadium. We debarked the train at the Oakland Coliseum station, and were immediately accosted by numerous homeless folks looking for a handout. AS we walked across the bridge to the stadium, there was a guy on a bike trying to scalp tickets that folks had already used to enter the stadium (hence, they're no good). Luckily, we had bought our tickets online, and just walked on by. The coliseum is very large, and doesn't do it for me as a baseball stadium. For football however, I imagine this place is rockin. Our seats were along the Right Field line up on the second level. The crowd seemed sullen (no surprise here, after all it is Oakland!) and a bit unfriendly. WE watched about 5 innings, got an order of Garlic Fries (the best thing about the trip, frankly, as long as you are willing to deal with the consequences of eating garlic), and headed back to San Fran (a MUCH nicer city).

i don't know what jerry h was complaining about too, i live in houston too, and Oakland was not that awful when i visited last summer. it was not as "pretty view" as SF, but it was definitely a fun experience. the kids there are very funny

Some of these ratings, you've got to be kidding. 40 years in Houston--perfectly safe. 1 year (and only one year) in Oakland--assaulted. Also, what hotels get these ratings, the Roadway Inn on Broadway? Any good ones are in SF, not Oakland. And shopping...hell, there's not even a Target here, much less a mall or something. What big city can say that? It's a beautiful location done horribly wrong with way too much crime, homeless, racial problems, etc. for it's size. I can say the teams are well supported. But of course if they don't win, well there's hell to pay on the streets!
