Philadelphia has a well-deserved reputation as a great sports town; from the decades-long histories of the Phillies, Eagles, and Big Five to the more recent championships of the Flyers and Sixers, sports have always been intertwined with the city's culture.

The city's reputation for rude fans is also well-deserved, as evidenced by the booing of Santa Claus at an Eagles game. But fans here know their stuff.

Expense-wise, the town is average. Philly is a sprawling city, but for a road-trip, it is pretty compact, with the airport, stadiums, and most attractions right downtown. Philadelphia hotels are not too expensive.

FOOD

Cheesesteaks, pretzels, and hoagies; the staples of the Philadelphian's diet. All have been taken to an art form, the cheesesteaks in particular. Philly is a big city, so there is plenty of variety if you're looking for it.

PHILADELPHIA ATTRACTIONS

Philadelphia is a very old city, and was the location of many of the nation's most important events, such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence. There is plenty to see around town. Independence Hall, the Betsy Ross House, and the Liberty Bell are all right downtown within walking distance of each other. Valley Forge is about 25 miles away.

NIGHTLIFE

Philadelphia offers a lot of alternatives after-hours. You can find anything from live music to sports bars around town. South Street is the most well-known area in Philly, but Old City and Center City are also good places to go. If you're looking for a club atmosphere, try Delaware Avenue.

TRANSPORTATION

Downtown historic Philadelphia is easy to get around on foot. However, the stadiums are a few miles from downtown, so a car might not be a bad idea. Cab fare from the airport to Center City is at least $20.

There are buses everywhere, and there is a subway system as well. Click here for SEPTA, the city's transportation system.

WEATHER
