South Street Bars & Restaurants

South Street is the most well-known area of Philadelphia for bars; the place is loaded with them.  As with most downtown neighborhoods, parking can be difficult.  The South Street area is a few blocks southwest of Old City, near the Delaware River.  Just walk around and you'll find plenty of places to go.

 

The Blarney South

blarneysouth.jpg (39849 bytes)The Blarney South is an Irish Bar that serves up good Irish-style food, plus an exceptional Philly cheese steak.  Definitely worth stopping into for a pint.

 

O'Neal's

oneals.jpg (36705 bytes)O'Neal's has about 20 beers on tap and a hundred more in bottles.  An excellent place for food, sports, and beer.

 

Who's on Third

American/Dance

700 S. 3rd St

Who's on Third looks odd and small from the outside, but it is actually fairly large and is crowded.  Only a few beers on tap, but lots of beers in bottles.

 

The Artful Dodger

Daiquiri

400 S. 2nd St

The Artful Dodger is small and is a good place to hang out.  There is live music on weekends, when it can get very crowded.

 

Manny Brown's

Tex Mex

512 South St

Manny Brown's is a good hangout place that isn't too crowded.  A lot of people start the evening here before going to the more well-known bars.  The menu is Tex Mex, but they serve Guiness as well.

 

Fat Tuesday's

Daiquiri

431 South St.

Fat Tuesday's is an open-air daiquiri and frozen drink bar that serves up bar food.  The crowd is predictably young and drinks a lot; its a fun place.

 

 

Center City Bars & Restaurants

Center City is the downtown area of Philly.  It is loaded with Irish Bars, although you can find other bar varieties as well.

 

McGillin's Old Ale House

mcgillins.jpg (27314 bytes)McGillin's is a true brew pub with cheap food ($6-$13) and beer specials every night.  It has been in operation since 1860; the liquor licenses are on the walls to prove it.

 

Fergie's Pub

The Bards

An Irish Pub with a wide beer selection and plenty of TV's to catch the game.

 

Mahogany on Walnut

The Mahogany is an upscale cigar bar, with an air filtration system to keep the place from getting too smoky.  The food and drinks can get a little pricey. 

 

Dr. Watson's Pub

Neighborhood Pub

A nice pub atmosphere with live music.  They serve good food and also have some pool tables.

 

 

Old City/Delaware Avenue Bars & Restaurants

Old City is the area near the Ben Franklin bridge along the Delaware River.  Delaware Avenue is located just east of this area, right along the Delaware River.

 

Finnigan's Wake

Club/Irish/Live Music

537-41 North 3rd St.

Finnigan's Wake is a large bar that appears to be several different Irish pubs from the outside.  There is live music on weekends, and a cover charge.

 

Anthony's Olde City Tavern

Warmdaddy's

Blues

Warmdaddy's is an upscale blues club that serves up great Cajun food ($13-$18 entrees) and has live blues every night.

 

Rock Lobster

American/Dance/Live Music/Seafood

Pier 13/15 Delaware Ave and Vine St

Rock Lobster is located right on the water in Old City, and features live music and dancing.  The food is good but very expensive ($8 burgers, $18-$34 entrees).

 

 

University City

The area around Penn and Drexel has some good offerings.  The crowd is decidedly college-age.

 

Blarney Stone

The Blarney Stone is a UPenn hangout, and a lot of drinking occurs there.  There is a DJ and a pool table as well.

 

New Deck Tavern

Live Music

3408 Sansom St.

The New Deck Tavern features live music.  The crowd is mostly college-aged, but is fairly laid back.  Worth checking out.
