Phoenix boasts teams in all four major sports. The Arizona Cardinals play outside of town in Tempe at Sun Devil Stadium, while the Diamondbacks (Chase Field) and Suns (USAirways Center) both play right downtown. The NHL's Coyotes play at Jobing.com Arena, 15 miles from downtown. Several teams in the area form baseball's Cactus League during spring training. Phoenix is a growing city, with a laid back pace. Many residents are retirees from other areas, and you will find the locals to be very friendly. Check out JOHNNY ON THE SPOT to see how others rate Phoenix!! FOOD Its easy to find places with cheap food and drink in Phoenix, but Phoenix also has its fair share of five star restaurants and up-scale nightclubs and drinking establishments. While southwest and Mexican cuisine are most prevalent around town, you can find any type of cuisine you are looking for. See our restaurants and bars page for more info. There's plenty to do around Phoenix. The Arizona Science Center is located downtown and houses a planetarium and an IMax theater. You can check out the local wildlife at the Phoenix Zoo, and the Desert Botanical Garden is right next door if you're more interested in the plant life. East of Phoenix is Scottsdale, with its countless golf courses and resort attractions; in fact, there are about 100 golf courses within 30 miles of Phoenix. Finally, the Grand Canyon is about 4 hours north of town. On your way, stop and check out scenic Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon, which are about 90 miles north of Phoenix. NIGHTLIFE There are plenty of great places to go downtown, especially around Chase Field and USAirways Center. The college-aged crowd hovers around the Arizona State campus in Tempe; Mill Avenue is a big strip of restaurants and bars just off campus. Old Town Scottsdale caters to the older crowd. There are nightclubs, martini bars, cigar bars and old school cantinas all within walking distance of each other. Check the Restaurants and Bars page for more info. TRANSPORTATION Although the airport is only five miles from downtown, you're best off renting an air conditioned car. Outside of downtown the area is spread out, and if you are planning on golfing, most of the courses are at least 20 or 30 minutes away. There is no public rail or subway system in Phoenix, and cabs will get to be pretty expensive. The Downtown Area Shuttle, or DASH, provides free service around downtown with stops every five minutes or so. WEATHER Phoenix has a steady climate year round. It is hot and dry all year, with summer temperatures soaring into the 100’s on a daily basis. Although “its only dry heat” might sound like a cliché, the lack of humidity does reduce the heat significantly. Winters are very pleasant, with near-perfect weather every day. Check the City Weather page for historical temperatures and precipitation. |
