mellonarena.jpg (19019 bytes)Mellon Arena is a few blocks north of the downtown area.  It is home to the Penguins of the NHL.  The arena was built in 1961 (making it the oldest in the league by far), and holds 16,958.  The Pens will move into a new arena in 2010.

There isn't much to the arena, known as The Igloo.  It's main feature is a retractable roof, which wouldn't seem to be very useful in Pittsburgh in the winter.  There is no evidence that the roof has been opened in quite some time.

There are parking lots on-site at the arena, but no bars in the immediate vicinity.  There are hotels downtown within walking distance.
