Great weather, but everything else is either average or below. All areas outside of downtown are super conservative christian oriented. Lots of cookie cutter neighborhoods, soccer moms/milths, and overall snooty people. Very scattered average to below nightlife. The traffic along I95 during rush hours is getting exponentially worse as people keep fleeing to the cookie cutter suburbs!

Awful city, looks like a big trailer park. Jags are terrible and have horrible attendance.

I'm a 26 y/o jacksonville native with a realistic view of my hometown. I've been everywhere on the eastcoast plus Chicago. Jacksonville is a typical mid-sized southern city with potential. Yes there are rednecks havens in certain parts of town, yes there's 14 churches in downtown alone, (mainly southern baptist which has helped keep downtown, where i live, in a coma for two decades, ) but they're slowly losing their grasp as change is inevitable. People here are tired of stripmalls, lame nightlife & sprawling suburbia. I live in a small but growing pocket of liberals, artists and non jesus freaks If it weren't for this oasis in the middle of jesus-land i would've already moved to ny, which i still consider. But this town is blowing up in terms of construction, population, and in a slower sense, culture & nightlife. We've had 3-4 new bars/clubs/venues open up in the past 6 months in downtown alone, all within walking distance. Tourist still may not be impressed when visiting, but for people who aren't all about tourist traps, it may be worth checking out.

I've lived all over the USA and visited many places. I like Jacksonville, I bought a house here, downtown, where I couldn't afford one in other big cities. There are things to do, if you know where to look! Downtown is rather dull, but Jags and Suns games are a blast. I also going to the LAnding with my husband and riding the water taxi. There are some good concerts at the Florida Theater. As a theater goer, several Broadway touring companies come through, as well as several good local theater companies. The city is not a tourist trap, it's a home. It can be a fun place to visit for a weekend too. There are some rednecks here and there, but hey, that's Amercia. The people I've met and known here are friendly! The food scene is not New York, but there are several good places to eat in San Marco, SouthBank, the beaches, and Riverside. As for the lady who posted that all the night-life is in "bad neighborhoods, she wouldn't go in, what's that? Every city has "bad neighborhoods" and face it, those neighborhoods are home to someone, like me for instance. Come to Jacksonville, and if you want to know what to or where to go, just ask anyone you see, they will tell you! There are some fun clubs that are not in bad neighborhoods. And I walk everywhere and feel safe!

I moved to Jax a year and 4 months ago. Do to my job, I have had the pleasure of getting around the city via car in just about every neighborhood.I agree with many of the previous reviews. It has been difficult for me to adjust, mainly to the culture here. I came from Chicago. There is no pizza or other italian food for that matter. The restuaurants here just aren't as good. The only really good food is seafood from one of the more expensive restaurants. If you are woman, which I am, the shopping is terrible. We go to Orlando. I have to say I have seen progress since I got here, but it is very slow. The natives/locals do not want progress and will tell you so. The superbowl festivities were fun and I think Jax did a great job, but everything is back to normal. There are a lot of rednecks here and clothing and hair styles are about 20 years behind. Alltel stadium is fun too but there are no other pro sports. There are only really two bars around the stadium. There are huge religious overtones here. It is very conservative. I find the women to be very frumpy and uptight here. You have to like boating, fishing and golf here or you won't make it. Nightlife...who knows. Seems every nightclub has shootings and is in a neighborhood I don't want to be in. Best nightclubs, for dancing, are probably at the beaches. If you want pretentious, go to San Marco area and hang out. Stay away from the Westside, northside, northwest side and Arlington areas. If you are going to live here, live on southside or at the beaches. The beaches here are not tropical and the city does not have the tropical appearance and feel that south florida has. The water is not that tropical blue that you envision and the sand is not white. If you are coming from New York or Chicago you will have a hard time. People do not walk here. I am a very active person and find I am way more senditary (spelling?) Boating fishing and golfing are non-active to me. I gave the sports scene in 8 because I figured right now that is all that would appeal out of all the categories. Personally, I think it is way to cold here and most of the time I can't tell whether I am in Georgia or Florida. Still I am here for the time being and will do the best I can.

Went to Jacksonville on business Feb. 17-21, 2005. HAD A BLAST at this new club that just opened on the Landing. Took a water taxi direct from our hotel (the Hilton) straight to the club. The "Twisted Martini" was so much fun we went back 3 times. 5 separate bars with an upscale atmosphere and incredible food! The drinks were the bomb! No watered down beverages at this place! You definitely got your monies worth! Although smoking was permitted in the club you'd never know it. You could breathe! I've been to clubs where you leave hacking, but somehow they got it right with the ventilation and the feel. The music was awesome from jazz early on, to great club DJ groove as the night wore on. We spent the extra cash and went in for the private "snuggle" booths or "bottle service" as they call it and loved the VIP treatment. A great club that rivals all the upscale places in Vegas, LA and NY.. and in Jacksonville! Can't say enough.. check it out on the Landing. Michele

A first-rate dump of a town, Jacksonville really doesn't have much to offer aside from attending whatever game you are there for. I gave the city a "2" because the beach areas are pretty nice and also because of the Florida-Georgia game, but honestly, why else would you be in this place. The Jaguars fans never really had to pay a price when they came into the league, and are as a result not quite as die-hard as they'd have you think.

I am a southerner born in N.C. We relocated to Jacksonville, via the Navy in 1989. I fell in love with Jacksonville, instantly. It is very southern, granted, and it does have a higher than average illitarcay rate. Also, there is some truth to the redneck, preducided bit, but as the town grows, there is less and less. But tell me where you don't see that, and what city doesn't have it's negatives. All that being said, what thrilled me about Jacksonville, is their willingness to welcome everyone into their city - true southern hospitality, but yet a big city, in Florida, with a bit more class than the traditional southern city. There is so much culutre in the city if you will look. The Art Museum on Beach Blvd, the Museum of Science and History downtown, a quaint art musuem in old Hemming Plaza, and the Cummer Art Gallary in Riverside. There is also a very small, but educational Marine Musuem at the beaches, the zoo, Annheiser Bush, wonderful tennis, golf, beaches, all within miles. The ciy is growing, so adding many wonderful restaurants. Downtown there is now a jazz bar, two Moraccon Restuarants,a few upscale french restaurants, and a wonderful indian restuarant on the Southside. As it is not a tourist town, there are not many huge hotels, but one of the best is the Adams Mark, with reasonble prices, downtown by the Landing. I stayed there for a retreat, and payed $98 a night. There is sports galore, the Jacksonville Suns semi pro baseball, the indoor areana football, the Tomcats, the Jaguars, the Gator Bowl Game, and the Barricudas. We even have a semi pro basketball team. No one mentioned the wonderful new Veteren's Areana, where we recently had Prince, Usher, BRittany Spears, and Elton John. Doesn't sound like a redneck town to me!! There is alsowonderful Metro park, where outdoor concerts are held. WEvery May they have the World of Nations Fair with 70 nations represented. Talk about an educational experience. There are also two wonderful performing arts venue. The Historic Florida Theater, and the Florida Times Union Theater for the performing arts. I enjoy the Nutcracker Ballet every year at the FLorida Times Theater. We recently had two broadway plays here. Oh and I about forgot about our premier Dinner Theater, the Alhambra dinner Theater in Jacksonville Beach. The Fair grouns hold an up and coming yearly concert called the WArp Tour. It is mostly alternative Rock bands. Four of Jacksonville's own bands were there this eyar - my son attended. They are Limp Bisquit, Yellowcard, Shinedown, and Switchfoot. We are also now home to two cruise ships out of Mayport. So come and judge for yourself, does this sound like a redneck prejudiced, backwards town? I think not. Please come and visit Jacksonville, and enjoy what this beautiful river city has to offer.

The Super Bowl is a shot in the arm for Jacksonville and things are on the move....The Twisted Martini is going to be an addition to the Landing and downtown is in a revitalization stage. Old visitors who were not impressed on an earlier visit should plan to visit again closer to Super Bowl and enjoy the hospitality!

I am a Jackstonian and proud of it. I have traveled around and can't say I have found a friendlier place. If you run into someone that isn't they are probably from up north. That is why the Jackstonian is a dying breed. We are a large city (1 + million) with small town values. If you are looking for a lot of nite life you need to keep on going down 95 right into Miami(south Florida. If we are trashed it is from all the snow birds. LOVE MY TOWN!! GO JAGSSSSSSS!

I've lived in jacksonville for five years now. No downtown scene worth talking about. Too many jesus freaks and the First Facist (Baptist) Church rules the city. Rednecks galore, with their ignorant, racist, sexist view of the world, despite the fact that most have never seen anywhere else. Illiteracy is common. The only nightlife are people living on the street. Fair weather sports fans-more blackouts for jaguar games than are actually shown on tv. The only concerts that sell out are honky tonk and hip-hop. They actually teach creationism in schools-why not teach other fairy tales such as Snow White- as long as the word "Black" does not appear in the title. I've heard the word "nigger" more times in one week than the rest of my life combined.

Jacksonville is a lower middle class anti-education,anti-intellectual Anywheresville USA. The people of Jacksonburgville are 70% transients who don't care about their city as they will be leaving next year anyway. Jacksonville is ugly with stripmalls and trash every where you look. The locals are friendly but according to statistics one in 4 of them can't read. On the plus side it has the highest Syphillis rate in the entire state so something is going on.

Dumb redneck capital of the world. Fortunately, the ocean is close by and on a visit you will be fairly close to Orlando. Or Daytona, if you like the whole redneck thing.
