If you are a young professional, don't come to this city. The sports scene here is awful. The only sports here is college sports, the boring Derby and couple of a joke minor league teams. The residents of this city want to keep this city a small town atomsphere, which stinks because Louisville is capable of more. Our leaders wonder why young people want to leave this town. One thing that is great is 4th Street Live, with it's many restaurants and other activities.

If your looking for good sports and its something besides the derby... then stay away from Loserville. I'm from here so I know alot about the city. The sports here sucks. Sure the university of loserville is here and we have a minor league baseball team, but loserville blew its chance for a major professional sports team back when the aba folded, and the kentucky colonels couldn't get into the nba. Unless you want to waste your time and money, dont come here... if your looking to go somewhere in the area, try nashville, I really liked it.

Derby Day is fun but The Oaks (the day before) is a much mroe reasonably priced ticket and just as much fun. Tyr to find creative ways to sneak booze inside. You can bring in a full cooler as long as there's no alcohol. Good ideas include hollowing out the area between the inside and outside lining of your cooler for pints, filling freezer packs with bourbon instead of water, and strapping a fifth inside the top of your straw hat. The infield is insane. Spring for a ticket in the grandstand and make a trip to the paddock. There are more restaurants per capita in Louisville than anywhere in the USA. Bars are good. Slugger Museum is ok.

There's really only one day a year to go to Louisville, but MAN is it worth it. Derby day is just a great time all around. I've never actually stayed at a hotel in Louisville around the Derby, so I don't really know what to expect on that front. The bar scene tends to be a little weak, as Louisville doesn't have too much of a downtown for the nightlife to focus on. The race itself is just a blast. For fun-loving folks, the infield is the place to congregate. Mint Juleps are a must--a somewhat strong mix of whiskey, sugar and mint, they tend to kick the butt of the first-time drinker. It's pretty strong and not really all that tasty, but when in Rome... Went to the Breeders Cup at Churchill Downs a few years back and the scene was much more tame. That crowd was more there for the actual horse racing, and did not have the pagentry of the Derby. As a track, Churchill is very old and kind of dumpy...but the derby museum is pretty cool (open year round except for derby day). See you there the first Saturday in May!!

This is specifically a Derby-related comment. I go every year, I get in Friday night and camp out in front of Churchill (people start showing up about 4AM), or get in Saturday morning and go straight to the track. The gates open at 8:30. You can't bring beer into the infield, but you can try sneaking things in - its hit or miss whether or not they will search you. The Derby is a great trip, although we went out to bars in town one year, and thought the scene was pretty weak. So now we just go right to the track. Hotels are difficult unless you want to stay for three nights at exorbitant prices; I wouldn't recommend it. I would get in late Friday or early Saturday morning, then get out of Dodge after the race. Louisville is a cheap town to fly in and out of; this is a great trip, highly recommended.
