Lasagna

Submitted by The Doctor

This is a great lasagna recipe favored by fans everywhere.  I have added some extra steps to the traditional recipe to make the preparation more enjoyable.

Time Required:  1-2 hours

Skill Required:  Moderate to intermediate cooking skills needed

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs Italian sausage, with casings removed
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 3 beef bouillon cubes
  • 12 oz tomato paste
  • 2 large cans (28 oz each) tomato puree
  • 1 large can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt, pepper, garlic powder, basil, and oregano
  • Minced garlic
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup dry red wine
  • 2 cups Romano cheese
  • 2 lbs ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 lb cooked lasagna noodles

Steps:

  • In a large frying pan, brown the sausage, ground sirloin, and garlic in olive oil.
  • Sing "Hail to the Redskins"
  • Add the tomato paste, tomato puree and the crushed tomatoes. Stir to blend.
  • Sing "Hail to the Redskins"
  • Add a tomato can of water, plus basil, oregano, sugar, bouillon cubes, wine, and 1 cup of the Romano cheese. Add salt and pepper to taste. Stir and simmer for 1 hour.
  • Sing "Hail to the Redskins"
  • In a large mixing bowl, make the cheese filling by mixing the ricotta cheese, the beaten egg, one-half cup of the Romano cheese, garlic powder and a dash of salt and pepper to taste. Blend thoroughly.
  • Sing "Hail to the Redskins"
  • In a baking pan, spread enough of the tomato sauce to cover the bottom of the dish. Next, line the dish with a layer of lasagna noodles. Then, spread some of the mozzarella cheese.  Add more noodles and cover with the ricotta cheese mixture.  Repeat these layers until the pan is filled. Top with the last of the tomato sauce, sprinkled with the last of the Romano and mozzarella cheese.
  • Sing "Hail to the Redskins"
  • Bake at 400 for 45-60 minutes or until the cheese is completely melted.  Cover with tinfoil for the first 30-45 minutes to prevent the top from burning.
